It has been argued that gravity acts dissipatively on quantum-mechanical systems, inducing thermal fluctuations that become indistinguishable from quantum fluctuations. This has led some authors to demand that some form of time irreversibility be incorporated into the formalism of quantum mechanics. As a tool towards this goal we propose a thermodynamical approach to quantum mechanics, based on Onsager's classical theory of irreversible processes and on Prigogine's nonunitary transformation…

The irreversible quantum

We elaborate on the existing notion that quantum mechanics is an emergent phenomenon, by presenting a thermodynamical theory that is dual to quantum mechanics. This dual theory is that of classical

On Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics of Space-Time and Quantum Gravity

Based on recent results from general relativistic statistical mechanics and black hole information transfer limits a space-time entropy-action equivalence is proposed as a generalization of the

Unification of Relativistic and Quantum Mechanics from Elementary Cycles Theory

In Elementary Cycles theory elementary quantum particles are consistently described as the manifestation of ultra-fast relativistic spacetime cyclic dynamics, classical in the essence. The peculiar

Fluctuations of Intensive Quantities in Statistical Thermodynamics

The quasithermodynamic fluctuation theory of a model system of a large number of oscillators is extended to statistical thermodynamics based on the idea of perceiving the fluctuations of intensive variables as the fluctuation of specific extensive ones in a “thermodynamically dual” system.

Schroedinger vs. Navier-Stokes

This work supports the view that quantum mechanics has been argued to be a coarse-graining of some underlying deterministic theory by establishing a map between certain solutions of the Schroedinger equation, and the corresponding Solutions of the irrotational Navier–Stokes equation for viscous fluid flow.

The role of quantum recurrence in superconductivity, carbon nanotubes and related gauge symmetry breaking

Pure quantum phenomena are characterized by intrinsic recurrences in space and time. We use this intrinsic periodicity as a quantization condition to derive a heuristic description of the essential

On the origin of the weak equivalence principle in a theory of emergent quantum mechanics

We argue that in a framework for emergent quantum mechanics, the weak equivalence principle is a consequence of concentration of measure in large dimensional spaces of $1$-Lipshitz functions.

Pauli problem in thermodynamics

A thermodynamic analogue of the Pauli problem (reconstruction of a wavefunction from the position and momentum distributions) is formulated. The coordinates of a quantum system are replaced by the

The Holographic Quantum

We present a map of standard quantum mechanics onto a dual theory, that of the classical thermodynamics of irreversible processes. While no gravity is present in our construction, our map exhibits

Emergence from irreversibility

The emergent nature of quantum mechanics is shown to follow from a precise correspondence with the classical theory of irreversible thermodynamics. Specifically, the linear (or Gaussian) regime of

Quantum gravity as a dissipative deterministic system

Emergent quantum mechanics and emergent symmetries

Quantum mechanics is ‘emergent’ if a statistical treatment of large scale phenomena in a locally deterministic theory requires the use of quantum operators. These quantum operators may allow for
