AIMS Temporary circulatory support with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is often the only alternative for supporting patients with refractory cardiogenic shock (RCS). In practice, this strategy is limited to a small minority of patients hospitalized in tertiary-care centres with ECMO programs.
