The effect of daily administration of trimethoprim (TMP), trimethoprim--sulfamethoxazole (TMP--SMX), or placebo on aerobically grown fecal gram-negative bacteria was monitored in 136 students from the United States during a two-week diarrhea-prevention study in Mexico.
