By using a symmetry motivated basis to evaluate local distortions against pair distribution function data, we show without prior bias, that the off-center Ti displacements in the archetypal ferroelectric BaTiO_{3} are zone centered and rhombohedral-like across its known ferroelectric and paraelectric phases. We construct a simple Monte Carlo model that captures our main experimental findings and demonstrate how the rich crystallographic phase diagram of BaTiO_{3} emerges from correlations of… Expand
Dynamic Displacement Disorder of Cubic BaTiO_{3}.
The narrow sheets of diffuse scattering, related to the famous anisotropic longitudinal correlations of Ti ions, are shown to be caused by the overdamped anharmonic soft phonon branch, demonstrating that the occurrence of narrow sheetsof diffuse scattering agrees with a displacive picture of the cubic phase of this textbook ferroelectric material. Stochastic Polarization Instability in PbTiO_{3}.
A novel quantitative description of the temperature-driven local structural correlations in PbTiO_{3} via the development of characteristic relative cationic shifts is provided, suggesting that polarization instability can serve as a generic fingerprint for phase transitions as well as for better understanding structure-property relationships in P bTiO-based ferroelectric solid solutions. Effect of static local distortions vs. dynamic motions on the stability and band gaps of cubic oxide and halide perovskites
Ternary ABX3 perovskites made of corner-sharing BX6 octahedra have long featured prominently in solid-state chemistry and in condensed matter physics, but the joint understanding of their two mainExpand
Local structures and temperature-driven polarization rotation in Zr-rich PbZr1-xTixO3

Revisiting eigen displacements of tetragonal BaTiO3: Combined first principle and experimental investigation
Abstract BaTiO3 is a classical ferroelectric studied for last one century for its ferroelectric properties. Lattice dynamics of BaTiO3 is crucial as the utility of devices is governed by phonons. InExpand

Unconventional Continuous Structural Disorder at the Order-Disorder Phase Transition in the Hexagonal Manganites
Neutron-scattering experiments probe changes in atomic structure of the multiferroic hexagonal manganite YMnO${}_{3}$ during its structural phase transition and find signatures of a new type ofExpand
XAFS investigation of the correlation of Bi-sublattice disorder with ferromagnetism of multiferroic BiFeO3 nanoparticle
Practical utilization of room temperature multiferroic BiFeO3 is intrinsically limited by the absence of ferromagnetism. In this backdrop, development of weak ferromagnetism in 20 nm-sized BiFeO3Expand
