The first, suggested by Samanos et al. , involves the coupling of ethylene directly with chemisorbed acetate. The resulting acetoxyethyl–palladium intermediate then undergoes b-hydride elimination to form vinyl acetate. Alternatively, ethylene could first dehydrogenate to form a vinyl–palladium intermediate, which then couples with an acetate species adsorbed on the surface to form the VAM directly. This latter mechanism was proposed by Moiseev et al. 4] as well as by Nakamura and Yasui. We…

Vinyl acetate formation by the reaction of ethylene with acetate species on oxygen-covered Pd(111).
TLDR
The reaction pathway of vinyl acetate synthesis is scrutinized by reacting gas-phase ethylene with eta2-acetate species with a Pd(111)-O(2x2) model catalyst surface in ultrahigh vacuum, and it is found that the 1414 cm-1 infrared feature due to the symmetric OCO stretching mode of the acetate species decreases in intensity due to reaction with gas- phase ethylene.
The Surface Chemistry of Acetic Acid on Pd{111}
TLDR
XPS, temperature-programmed reaction and HREELS have been used to study the adsorption and reactions of acetic acid on Pd{111} and the monodentate acetate appears to resemble closely the acetate species observed under reaction conditions at the surface of a pure palladium vinyl acetate synthesis catalyst.
