This paper presents some results of the first studies done in the country using information from patents applied for in Cuba by national and foreign entities. Its main objective is to demonstrate the potential usefulness of this source of data, and of the types of analysis used for the elaboration of diagnoses, as well as for the description of some tendencies of national innovation and R+D efforts.
