Teachers have frequently reported that large class size causes them stress, very little research has been conducted to examine the relationship of perceived teacher stress to real variations in pupil-teacher ratios. This study examined the relationship between 223 elementary teachers' perceptions of class size as a stressful circumstance and the pupil-teacher ratios in the 197 elementary schools where they taught.
