The functional role of the ascending projection from A1 noradrenergic neurons of the caudal ventrolateral medulla to the supraoptic nucleus of the hypothalamus was investigated by examining the effects of electrical stimulation of the A1 region on the activity of supraoptic neurons deemed to be vasopressinergic or oxytocinergic on the basis of basal firing patterns and responsivity to baroreceptor activation.
