Abstract The Mossbauer spectrum of magnetite consists of two superimposed six line hyperfine spectra corresponding to A and B sites. The lines of the B site spectrum are broadened relative to those of the A site spectrum. It is suggested that the broadening is due to an electron exchange between the Fe 3+ and Fe 2+ ions at the B site.
