We report the Pockels electro-optic properties of ZrO 2 and HfO 2 orthorhombic Pbc2 1 and rhombohedral R3m ferroelectric phases, and we compare them to the well-known LiNbO 3 Pockels material from density functional theory calculations using the CRYSTAL suite of program. Specifically, three essential processes are explicitly investigated: The electronic, the ionic (or vibrational), and the piezoelectric contributions. Our calculations reveal that the ionic part coming from the low-frequency…

Stabilization of the epitaxial rhombohedral ferroelectric phase in ZrO2 by surface energy

Doped HfO 2 and HfO 2 -ZrO 2 compounds are gaining significant interest thanks to their ferroelectric properties in ultrathin films. Here, we show that ZrO 2 could be a new playground for doping and

First-principles study of the electro-optic effect in ferroelectric oxides.

The coupling between the electric field and the polar atomic displacements along the B-O chains is identified as the origin of the large electro-optic response in perovskite ABO3 compounds.

Linear electro-optic effect in ferroelectric HfO2-based epitaxial thin films

Electro-optic (EO) modulators for silicon photonics using CMOS-compatible materials and processes are in great demand. In this study, epitaxial (100)-undoped HfO2 and Y-doped HfO2 thin films were

Pockels effect in low-temperature rhombohedral BaTiO3

We report a first principles analysis of the linear electro-optic (EO) or Pockels effect in rhombohedral $\mathrm{BaTi}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ (BTO), the lowest temperature phase of this ferroelectric

Electro-optic properties in pure LiNbO3 crystals from the congruent to the stoichiometric composition

We report large and nonmonotonic dependences of the electro-optic (EO) coefficient r22 and the corresponding dielectric permittivity in pure LiNbO3 on the concentration of intrinsic defects related

Spectroscopic properties of oxygen vacancies in monoclinic HfO2 calculated with periodic and embedded cluster density functional theory

We have calculated the electronic structure and spectroscopic properties of the oxygen vacancy in different charge states in the monoclinic phase of $\mathrm{Hf}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$. Periodic and

Raman Spectroscopy as a Key Method to Distinguish the Ferroelectric Orthorhombic Phase in Thin ZrO2‐Based Films

Inducing and detecting the polar orthorhombic phase are crucial for the establishment of ferroelectricity in HfO2‐ and ZrO2‐based thin films. Unfortunately, commonly used structural characterization

Negative Capacitance in HfO2- and ZrO2-Based Ferroelectrics

Do we know the band gap of lithium niobate

Given the vast range of lithium niobate (LiNbO3) applications, the knowledge about its electronic and optical properties is surprisingly limited. The direct band gap of 3.7 eV for the ferroelectric

Intrinsic ferroelectricity in Y-doped HfO2 thin films

Ferroelectric HfO2-based materials hold great potential for the widespread integration of ferroelectricity into modern electronics due to their compatibility with existing Si technology. Earlier work
