The first decade of the nineteenth century saw the physical sciences permeated by the entirely new field of research stimulated by the discovery of the Voltaic battery. In those same years Avogadro, through the guidance of Vassalli Eandi1 and largely as a result of his own reading, became more and more deeply involved with his new intellectual pursuit. Naturally he did not fail to recognize the importance of the remarkable phenomena revealed through the application of Volta’s pile.
