The number of sodium channels increases sharply during development of rat skeletal muscle cells in vitro. An 8.5 kb mRNA encoding sodium channel alpha subunit rises to a peak on day 13 in vitro and falls to a value of 50% of the peak by day 18, consistent with the conclusion that mRNA abundance is a major determinant of the rapid rise in sodium channel number.
