In 1919, the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE) selected E. F. W. Alexanderson (Fig. 1) as the second recipient of its Medal of Honor. He was honored for “his pioneering accomplishments in the field of long distance radio communication, including his development of the radio frequency alternator which bears his name, a magnetic amplifier permitting effective modulation of the output of such an alternator, and a cascade radio frequency vacuum tube amplifier yielding exceptional total…
