The present essay analyzes the metaficticious character of three theatrical scenes in Alejo Carpentier’s The Lost Steps (1953). In the novel, three spectacles represent metaficticious mise in abyme that contribute to the entire comprehension of the novel. On one hand, they allow tracing the narrative merger of three time periods —pre-narrative, narrative and postnarrative— and, in addition, they come to exemplify Ricœur’s mimesis that organizes creation in three moments —the preconfiguration…
