We present a technique which allows subtle nonlinear quasi-static deformations of articulated characters to be compactly approximated by data-dependent eigenbases which are optimized for real time rendering on commodity graphics hardware. The method extends the common Skeletal-Subspace Deformation (SSD) technique to provide efficient approximations of the complex deformation behaviours exhibited in simulated, measured, and artist-drawn characters. Instead of storing displacements for key poses… Expand
Elasticity-inspired deformers for character articulation
TLDR
This paper proposes a specific deformer which is visually similar to nonlinear variational deformation methods and optimize skinning weights for the standard linear and dual quaternion skinning techniques so that the resulting deformations minimize an elastic energy function. Expand

TLDR
This work identifies the rotational component of an infinitesimal deformation and extends traditional linear modal analysis to track that component, and develops a procedure to integrate the small rotations occurring at the nodal points. Expand
Pose-space subspace dynamics
TLDR
This work demonstrates how to perform multi-model reduction of Finite Element Method (FEM) nonlinear elasticity, where separate reduced models are precomputed around a representative set of object poses, and then combined at runtime into a single fast dynamic system, using subspace interpolation. ii Implicit Skinning : Character Skin Deformation Guided by 3 D Scalar Fields

Position-based Skin Deformations for Interactive Character Animation
TLDR
This talk introduces a novel two-layered deformation framework, called position based skinning (PBS), which is able to mimic the macro-behaviors of the skin and capture secondary effects, such as volume conservation and jiggling, to produce a convincing organic-like deformation near joints. Expand
Efficient Deformations Using Custom Coordinate Systems
TLDR
A generic approach called subspace condensation is introduced, which activates full space simulation on the fly when an out-of-basis event is encountered, and incorporates various non-linearities and allows subspace methods to be used in cases where they previously would not have been considered. Expand
Direct manipulation of interactive character skins
TLDR
This paper compute the subspace of possible deformed vertex positions, display it for users, and let them place the vertex anywhere in this space, and the algorithm then computes the correct weights automatically. Expand
Building efficient, accurate character skins from examples
TLDR
An automated framework is presented that allows character artists to use the full complement of tools in high-end systems to create characters for interactive systems and fits the parameters of a deformation model that best approximates the original data yet remains fast to compute and compact in memory. Dynamic real-time deformations using space & time adaptive sampling
TLDR
This paper presents a robust, adaptive method for animating dynamic visco-elastic deformable objects that provides a guaranteed frame rate and demonstrates that the adaptive Green strain tensor formulation suppresses unwanted artifacts in the dynamic behavior, compared to adaptive mass-spring and other adaptive approaches.
