Serum samples collected on a single occasion from cattle, sheep and goats at sites in all 10 regions of Ghana were tested for antibodies to Ehrlichia (previously Cowdria) ruminantium, the causative agent of heartwater, by polyclonal competitive ELISA (PC-ELISA). The survey revealed the presence of heartwater-exposed ruminants throughout the country, with local seroprevalence up to 100%.
