Many immunization strategies have been proposed to prevent infectious viruses from spreading through a network. In this work, we study efficient immunization strategies to prevent a default contagion that might occur in a financial network. An essential difference from the previous studies on immunization strategy is that we take into account the possibility of serious side effects. Uniform immunization refers to a situation in which banks are “vaccinated” with a common low-risk asset. The…
Network versus portfolio structure in financial systems
Abstract The question of how to stabilize financial systems has attracted considerable attention since the global financial crisis of 2007–2009. Recently, Beale et al. [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA
Efficient network disintegration under incomplete information: the comic effect of link prediction
TLDR
By using link prediction method to recover partial missing links in advance, the method can largely improve the network disintegration performance and even outperforms than the results based on complete information when the size of missing information is relatively small.
Cost-effective Network Disintegration through Targeted Enumeration
TLDR
A cost-effective targeted enumeration method for network disintegration that achieves a satisfying trade-off between effectiveness and efficiency and can be applied to other computationally intractable combinational optimization problems.
Efficient disintegration strategies with cost constraint in complex networks: The crucial role of nodes near average degree.
TLDR
This paper first put forward a disintegration cost model and an optimization model for disintegration strategy, then analyzes the hub strategy, leaf strategy, and the average degree strategy to investigate the nodes tendency of the optimal disintegration Strategy.
Optimal Disintegration Strategy With Heterogeneous Costs in Complex Networks
TLDR
It is demonstrated that, in contrast to the classical hub node strategy, low-cost nodes play a key role in the optimal disintegration strategies if the cost constraint is tight and the disintegration cost is strongly heterogeneous.
Optimal disintegration strategy in spatial networks with disintegration circle model.
TLDR
This study first carries out an optimization model with multiple disintegration circles in the spatial network and introduces a tabu search to seek the optimal disintegration strategy, demonstrating that the "best" disintegration Strategy can be identified through global searches in theatial network.
Mitigation of cascading failures in complex networks
TLDR
An intuitive, powerful and simple-to-implement approach for mitigation of cascading failures on complex networks based on local network structure is developed and an algorithm to select critical nodes is offered, the protection of which ensures better survival of the network.

Suppressing epidemics with a limited amount of immunization units.
TLDR
An immunization approach based on optimizing the susceptible size is developed, which outperforms the best known strategy based on immunizing the highest-betweenness links or nodes and finds that the network's vulnerability can be significantly reduced.
Improving immunization strategies.
TLDR
This work introduces an immunization method where the percentage of required vaccinations for immunity are close to the optimal value of a targeted immunization scheme of highest degree nodes, and finds it to be significantly more effective than other efficient strategies on three real social networks and on a scale-free network model.
Efficient immunization strategies for computer networks and populations.
TLDR
It is shown that the immunization threshold is dramatically reduced with the suggested strategy, for all studied cases, and analytically the critical threshold for complete immunization is studied.
Finding a better immunization strategy.
TLDR
A newly developed graph-partitioning strategy is presented which requires 5% to 50% fewer immunization doses compared to the targeted strategy and achieves the same degree of immunization of the network.
Stability Analysis of Financial Contagion Due to Overlapping Portfolios
TLDR
A network approach to the amplification of financial contagion due to the combination of overlapping portfolios and leverage is developed, and it is shown how it can be understood in terms of a generalized branching process.

DebtRank-transparency: Controlling systemic risk in financial networks
TLDR
This work shows that systemic risk in financial networks can be drastically reduced by increasing transparency, i.e. making the DebtRank of individual banks visible to others, and by imposing a rule, that reduces interbank borrowing from systemically risky nodes.
Cascading Failures in Bi-partite Graphs: Model for Systemic Risk Propagation
TLDR
The model efficiently identifies a significant portion of the actual failed banks reported by Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and identifies that commercial rather than residential real estate assets are major culprits for the failure of over 350 US commercial banks during 2008–2011.
