We present a new method which combines Car-Parrinello and Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics in order to accelerate density functional theory based ab initio simulations. Depending on the system a gain in efficiency of 1 to 2 orders of magnitude has been observed, which allows ab initio molecular dynamics of much larger time and length scales than previously thought feasible. It will be demonstrated that the dynamics is correctly reproduced and that high accuracy can be maintained throughout…

Second generation Car-Parrinello theory and application to liquid water and phase change materials

In this thesis a new method is developed, which combines Car-Parrinello and Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics in order to accelerate density functional theory based ab-initio simulations. Depending

Car–Parrinello molecular dynamics

The Car–Parrinello (CP) method made molecular dynamics simulation with on‐the‐fly computation of interaction potentials from electronic structure theory computationally feasible. The method

An efficient time-stepping scheme for ab initio molecular dynamics simulations

If the Verlet method is used in conjunction with pre- and postprocessing, the accuracy of the time integration is significantly improved with only a small computational overhead and the structural properties obtained are found to be sufficiently accurate even for large time steps close to the stability limit.

Real-world predictions from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations.

In this review we present the techniques of ab initio molecular dynamics simulation improved to its current stage where the analysis of existing processes and the prediction of further chemical

Verlet-like algorithms for Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics with unequal electronic occupations.

The general approach to work with fixed but arbitrary occupations within the Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics scheme is revisited, focusing on the procedure which is required to maintain the orthonormality constraints in the commonly used position-Verlet integrator.

Analysis of Time Reversible Born-Oppenheimer Molecular Dynamics

The TRBOMD scheme, which preserves the time reversibility of the Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics even with non-convergent self-consistent field iteration, is analyzed and the stability condition, as well as the accuracy of TRbOMD for computing physical properties, are derived.

Static and Dynamical Properties of Liquid Water from First Principles by a Novel Car-Parrinello-like Approach.

This work assesses the accuracy of ab initio molecular dynamics at the semilocal density functional level of theory to describe structural and dynamic properties of liquid water at ambient conditions and can estimate both the thermodynamic value of the diffusion coefficient and the shear viscosity.

Computational Methods for Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics

Ab initio molecular dynamics is an irreplaceable technique for the realistic simulation of complex molecular systems and processes from first principles. This paper proposes a comprehensive and

Generalized extended Lagrangian Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics.

The extended Lagrangian Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics is generalized in the limit of vanishing self-consistent field optimization prior to the force evaluations and is applicable to a broader range of materials with improved accuracy and stability compared to previous formulations.
