Purpose Antispasmodics like phloroglucinol are commonly used to alleviate pain. Various authorities recommend the use of this drug for conditions such as dysmenorrhoea, threatened abortion or labour pains. The goal was to carry out a systematic review analysing the existing data concerning the efficacy of phloroglucinol to treat pain in obstetrical or gynaecologic cases. The protocol was registered in Prospero (CRD 42018094065). Methods The keywords “phloroglucinol” and “randomised controlled…

Efficacy of phloroglucinol for acceleration of labour: a systematic review and meta‑analysis

The application of phloroglucinol is proved to be effective for accelerating the labour process, reducing the risk of maternal and neonatal complications.

Phloroglucinol could attenuate PD and inhibit the contraction of rat gastric circular muscle and uterine smooth muscle induced by OT, and provides novel ideas for the role of phloroglucainol in PD development.

Phloroglucinol Attenuates DNA Damage and Apoptosis Induced by Oxidative Stress in Human Retinal Pigment Epithelium ARPE-19 Cells by Blocking the Production of Mitochondrial ROS

It is suggested that phloroglucinol might have therapeutic potential to prevent oxidative stress-mediated damage in RPE cells by protecting DNA damage, autophagy, and subsequent apoptosis through mitigation of mtROS generation.

A meta‐analysis of 5 trials found that Phloroglucinol favorably impacts on the total duration of the labor in primiparae and multiparae women with a singleton pregnancy.

Efficacy of phloroglucinol for treatment of abdominal pain: a systematic review of literature and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials versus placebo

Only one RCT found that phloroglucinol was superior to placebo, although with a high risk of bias, and the meta-analysis found a risk ratio of 1.10 (95% CI 0.95, 1.27) with no statistical significance.

Pain during medical abortion, the impact of the regimen: A neglected issue? A review

Standardised evaluation of pain is needed and the correlation between the dosage of misoprostol and the intensity of pain must be assessed in future studies.

Diagnosis and management of dysmenorrhoea

Until recently, many medical and gynaecological texts ascribed the source of dysmenorrhoea to emotional or psychological problems—for example, anxiety, emotional instability, a faulty outlook on sex and menstruation, and imitation of the mother's feelings about menstruation.

Phloroglucinol for acceleration of labour: double blind, randomized controlled trial.

Phloroglucinol shortens the duration of labour, is non toxic to both mother and fetus and does not cause primary post partum haemorrhage.

A Prospective, Randomized Comparison of Intramuscular Phloroglucinol Versus Oral Misoprostol for Cervix Pretreatment Before Diagnostic Hysteroscopy.

Intramuscular phloroglucinol is more effective and safer than oral misoprostol in inducing proper cervical priming and may be the optimal choice for cervical pretreatment before diagnostic hysteroscopy.

Effectiveness of Phloroglucinol to accelerate labor in Primigravidas at term : Double blind , randomized controlled trial

Phloroglucinol shortens the duration of labour effectively and does not increase the risk of primary post partum hemorrhage and is not associated with any apparent adverse maternal or neonatal outcomes.

Antispasmodics for labour.

There is low quality evidence that antispasmodics reduce the duration of first stage of labour and increase the cervical dilatation rate, but the quality of studies was poor, as only four trials were assessed as low risk of bias.

Effect of phloroglucinol on pain in aged patients undergoing hysteroscopy

Intramuscular injection of phloroglucinol can alleviate the pain in aged female patients undergoing hysteroscopy, and there were no significant differences in the blood pressure and saturation of blood oxygen between the two groups.
