The balance of osteogenesis and adipogenesis in bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) is disrupted in osteoporosis. This study was designed to investigate the effects of extract of Ginkgo biloba (EGB) on proliferation, osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells in vitro. The effect of EGB on proliferation was evaluated by CCK-8 assay and flow cytometry. Osteogenic differentiation was evaluated by Alizarin Red S staining and Alkaline phosphatase assay… Expand
Aloin promotes osteogenesis of bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells via the ERK1/2-dependent Runx2 signaling pathway
Aloin promotes osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs through activation of the ERK1/2-Runx2 signaling pathway and effectively attenuated Runx2 activation in these cells and also suppressed osteoblastic differentiation. Expand
Bilobalide Suppresses Adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 Adipocytes via the AMPK Signaling Pathway
Results suggested that bilobalide inhibited adipogenesis and promoted lipolysis in 3T3-L1 cells by activating the AMPK signaling pathway. Expand
The impact of grape proanthocyanidin extract on dexamethasone-induced osteoporosis and electrolyte imbalance
To evaluate the effects of osteoporosis induced by dexamethasone (DEX) and assess the possible anti-osteoporotic effect of grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) on bone tissue of female albinoExpand
Small molecules for mesenchymal stem cell fate determination
The target-based manipulation of lineage-specific commitment by small molecules offers substantial insights into bone marrow microenvironment regulation, adipose tissue homeostasis, and therapeutic strategies for MSC-related diseases. Expand
Hormesis and stem cells enhancing cell proliferation, differentiation and resilience to inflammatory stress in bone marrow stem cells and their therapeutic implications.
Hormetic dose responses reported here for BMSCs are similar to those induced with other stem cell types, indicating a substantial degree of generality for hormetic responses in stem cells. Expand
p300/CBP inhibitor A-485 inhibits the differentiation of osteoclasts and protects against osteoporotic bone loss.
In vitro and in vivo findings suggest for the first time that A-485 has the potential to prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis and could therefore be considered as a therapeutic molecule against osteopornosis. Expand
Herb-Derived Products: Natural Tools to Delay and Counteract Stem Cell Senescence
The chance of using a number of herb-derived products as novel tools in the treatment of cell senescence is reviewed, highlighting the efficacy of these agents, often still far from being clearly understood. Expand
Hormesis and Ginkgo biloba (GB): Numerous biological effects of GB are mediated via hormesis
The demonstrated GB dose responses reflect the general occurrence of hormetic dose responses that consistently appear to be independent of the biological model, endpoint, inducing agent, and/or mechanism and have important implications for considered study designs involving dose selection, dose spacing, sample size, and statistical power. Effects of Egb 761 on bone mineral density, bone microstructure, and osteoblast function: Possible roles of quercetin and kaempferol
Determination of levels of three flavonoids of Egb 761, that are known to have bone conserving property, in serum and bone marrow suggests that kaempferol and quercetin, and not rutin, likely mediate the beneficial actions observed with EGB 761 treatment. Expand
Stimulatory effect of naturally occurring flavonols quercetin and kaempferol on alkaline phosphatase activity in MG-63 human osteoblasts through ERK and estrogen receptor pathway.
The results suggest that flavonols derivatives as quercetin and kaempferol can stimulate osteoblastic activity, and such compounds may represent new pharmacological tools for the treatment of osteoporosis. Expand
Comparison of Proliferative and Multilineage Differentiation Potential of Sheep Mesenchymal Stem Cells Derived from Bone Marrow, Liver, and Adipose Tissue
All three sources of fetal sheep MSCs had the identical trilineage differentiation potential and the proliferative capacity of liver and bone marrow derived M SCs were similar at different cell seeding densities except for the higher fold increase in B-MSCs at 2700 cells/cm 2 density. Expand
Activation of Peroxisome Proliferator-activated Receptor-γ Inhibits the Runx2-mediated Transcription of Osteocalcin in Osteoblasts*
This study demonstrates that the activation of PPARγ inhibits osteocalcin expression both by suppressing the expression of Runx2 and by interfering with the transactivation ability of RunX2. Expand
Adipocytic proportion of bone marrow is inversely related to bone formation in osteoporosis
C cancellous apposition rate reflects osteoblast activity, indicating that the increase in the volume of adipose tissue in osteoporosis is associated with reduced bone formation, supporting the postulated switch in differentiation of stromal cells from the osteoblastic to the adipocytic pathway in osteopsorosis. Expand
Estrogenic activities of Ginkgo biloba extracts.
The results indicated that GBE and its major components had the weak estrogenic activities through the estrogen response pathway by an interaction with the ER, which confirms the capacity as an alternative HRP. Expand
Radiographic evidence of mandibular osteoporosis improvement in Wistar rats treated with Ginkgo biloba
The EGb recovered the periodontal bone support and increased the mandibular cortical thickness, suggesting that the EGb may be effective in the treatment of osteoporosis. Expand
The Novel Zinc Finger-Containing Transcription Factor Osterix Is Required for Osteoblast Differentiation and Bone Formation
It is proposed that Runx2/Cbfa1-expressing preosteoblasts are still bipotential cells, because Osx null preostEoblasts express typical chondrocyte marker genes, and Osx acts downstream of Runx 2/C bfa1. Expand
Dietary phytoestrogens and their effect on bone: evidence from in vitro and in vivo, human observational, and dietary intervention studies.
The collective data suggest that diets rich in phytoestrogens have bone-sparing effects in the long term, although the magnitude of the effect and the exact mechanism(s) of action are presently elusive or speculative. Expand
Relationships between marrow fat and bone turnover in ovariectomized and intact rats.
Marrow fat content increased after bone volume began to decline in the metaphysis, and not at all in the epiphysis, while there was a reciprocal relationship between marrow fat content and bone formation rate. Expand
