PURPOSE The purpose of this investigation was to assess the effects of alterations in taper components on performance in competitive athletes, through a meta-analysis. [] Key Method Twenty-seven of 182 potential studies met these criteria and were included in the analysis. The dependent variable was performance, and the independent variables were the decrease in training intensity, volume, and frequency, as well as the pattern of the taper and its duration.

Effects of tapering on neuromuscular and metabolic fitness in team sports: a systematic review and meta-analysis
TLDR
Tapering is an effective training strategy to improve maximal power, maximal oxygen uptake, repeated sprint ability and change of direction speed in team sports, however, the literature lacks studies using various tapering strategies to compare their effectiveness and make evidence-based recommendations.
The Effects of Tapering on Performance in Elite Endurance Runners: A Systematic Review
The purpose of this study was to perform a systematic review determine the effects of tapering on performance in elite endurance runners. The taper is a key element of the physical preparation of
Tapering strategies applied to plyometric jump training: a systematic review with meta-analysis of randomized-controlled trials.
TLDR
PJT interventions that included a programmed taper induced significant improvements inJump performance in team-sport athletes after different tapering strategies in terms of volume, taper duration, and the type of PJT prescribed.
A review of literature on benefits of taper phase for main competition of periodization model in endurance athletes
Purpose The aim of this study was to provide athletes and coaches on informations and benefits of a taper through evidence-based scientific studies and literatures in order to optimize an athlete’s
Peaking for optimal performance: Research limitations and future directions
TLDR
Practical guidelines for planning effective tapers for the Vancouver 2010 and London 2012 Olympics will evolve from both experimental investigations and modelling of successful tapers currently employed in a wide range of sports.
Effects of a Tapering Period on Physical Condition in Soccer Players.
TLDR
A two-week step tapering program was found to be an effective periodization strategy to increase muscle power and acceleration, and to reduce stress perception in soccer amateur players.
Effect of tapering on anaerobic power and capacity of tae-kwon-do athletes
TLDR
It was concluded that two weeks of linear type tapering optimized the anaerobic power and capacity of male tae-kwon-do athletes.
Effect of varied tapering strategies on the Athletes mood state in selected athletics training centers of Ethiopia
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of varied tapering strategies on the athletes’ mood state which influence the performance of the athletes. Thirty seven young distance
Functional overreaching: the key to peak performance during the taper?
TLDR
This study showed that greater gains in performance and V˙O2max can be achieved when higher training load is prescribed before the taper but not in the presence of F-OR; peak performance is not delayed during taper when heavy training loads are completed immediately prior; and F- OR provides higher risk for training maladaptation, including increased infection risks.
Identifying Optimal Overload and Taper in Elite Swimmers over Time.
TLDR
Over the course of the swimmers' athletic careers, better performances were obtained with an increase in training load during the overload period followed by a sharper decrease in the taper period, and changes over time could be prescribed on the basis of the model results.

TLDR
Findings indicate that 7 d of tapered running improved distance running performance and running economy and a taper regimen of equivalent duration cycle training maintained performance in distance runners.

TLDR
A thorough review of the available literature suggests that training volume and frequency can be reduced to a higher extent than training intensity, if falling into detraining is to be avoided.
Design and analysis of research on sport performance enhancement.
TLDR
Assessment of research aimed at measuring performance enhancements that affect success of individual elite athletes in competitive events found that estimates of enhancement of performance in laboratory or field tests in most previous studies may not apply to elite athletesIn competitive events.
A meta-analysis to determine the dose response for strength development.
TLDR
The dose-response trends identified in this analysis support the theory of progression in resistance program design and can be useful in the development of training programs designed to optimize the effort to benefit ratio.
Physiological effects of tapering in highly trained athletes.
TLDR
This study examined some of the physiological and performance effects of three different tapers in highly trained athletes, finding that muscle glycogen concentration and citrate synthase activity increased significantly after ROT and HIT, and strength increased after all three tapers.
Effects of three tapering techniques on the performance, forces and psychometric measures of competitive swimmers
TLDR
None of the three types of tapering currently used by competitive swimmers could be shown to be more beneficial than the others, however, the importance of providing sufficient recovery before competition was highlighted, since 1 week of reduced training was not long enough to maximise the benefits ofTapering.
A theoretical study of taper characteristics to optimize performance.
TLDR
Greater training volume and/or intensity before the taper would allow higher performance gains, but would demand a greater reduction of the training load over a longer period.
Effects of taper on swim performance. Practical implications.
TLDR
It appears that a taper which improves performance involves a substantial (60 to 90%) graded reduction in training volume, and daily high intensity interval work over a 7- to 21-day period.
Effects of different stepwise reduction taper protocols on cycling performance.
TLDR
Results showed that a moderate (50%) reduction in weekly training volume appeared to be optimal in terms of enhancing performance, confirming the contention that proper placement of training volume during tapering, while maintaining exercise intensity, can elicit performance improvements.
Training theory and taper: validation in triathlon athletes
TLDR
A training theory with which to predict the effectiveness of various formats of taper in optimizing physical performance from a standardized period of training and taper is defined.
