The present study examined the actions of spiraprilic acid, a new non-sulfhydryl angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor upon aortic compliance (AC) in anesthetized dogs. Enalaprilic acid was examined for comparative purposes. AC was determined via sonomicrometric determination of the ratio of aortic systolic-diastolic diameter (mm) and arterial pulse pressure (mmHg). One AC unit (ACU) equals 10(-3) mm/mmHg. In non-thiazide pretreated animals, spiraprilic acid (1 mg/kg i.v.), caused a… Expand
Influence of antihypertensive therapy with cilazapril and hydrochlorothiazide on the stiffness of the aorta
TLDR
The results in patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension support the idea that ACE inhibitors, in addition to reducing blood pressure, may exert an additional hemodynamic effect in improving the elastic properties of the aorta. Expand

TLDR
An understanding of the role of the aortic elastic properties indicates their relevance at several sites of cardiovascular function, and they could have major clinical relevance as an additional mechanism for unloading the left ventricle, improving coronary circulation, and reducing the pulsatile stress of the arterial system. Newer ACE Inhibitors
TLDR
Experimental data indicate that ACE inhibitors are able to inhibit tissue ACE, that each drug may differ in the amount and duration of ACE inhibition in different tissues, and that tissue bioavailability seems to be the major determinant of these differential effects. Expand
