The ketogenic diet (KD) is a high fat and low carbohydrate and protein diet. It is used in the clinical treatment of epilepsy, in order to decrease cerebral excitability. KD is usually composed by long-chain triglycerides (LCT) while medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) diet is beginning to be used in some clinical treatment of disorders of pyruvate carboxylase enzyme and long-chain fatty acid oxidation. Our study aimed to analyze the effects of medium- and long-chain KD on cerebral electrical… Expand
Seizure Control by Derivatives of Medium Chain Fatty Acids Associated with the Ketogenic Diet Show Novel Branching-Point Structure for Enhanced Potency
TLDR
This study identifies a novel family of fatty acids, related to the MCT ketogenic diet, that show promise as new treatments for epilepsy control and possibly other MCTketogenic diet-responding conditions, such as Alzheimer disease. Expand
Medium-chain Triglyceride Ketogenic Diet, An Effective Treatment for Drug-resistant Epilepsy and A Comparison with Other Ketogenic Diets
TLDR
The author has used up to >70% MCTKD diet to maximize seizure control with gastrointestinal side effects optimally controlled, and many more patients with epilepsy who are not appropriate for CKD or modified Atkins diet or low glycemic index treatment will benefit from this treatment. Expand
Medium-chain triglyceride ketogenic diet for drug-resistant epilepsy in Taiwan : A prospective study in a single center
Objective: This study aimed to determine the efficacy of a medium-chain triglyceride ketogenic diet on patients with drug-resistant epilepsy over a period of 1 year and 8 months. Methods: PatientsExpand
Metabolic perturbations associated with the consumption of a ketogenic medium-chain TAG diet in dogs with idiopathic epilepsy
TLDR
Elucidating the global metabolic response of MCT consumption will not only improve the administration of current ketogenic diets for neurological disease models but also provides new avenues for research to develop better diet therapies with improved neuroprotective efficacies. Expand
Hypercaloric high-lipid diet and brain development: Effects on cortical spreading depression in adult rats
TLDR
CSD velocity changes observed in adulthood were associated with the hypercaloric dietary treatment during brain development, constituting evidence in favor of permanent or at least long-lasting electrophysiological effects related to the prevailing nutritional status during the period of brain growth spurt. Expand
Conjugated linoleic acid in the maternal diet differentially enhances growth and cortical spreading depression in the rat progeny.
TLDR
Data indicate that a maternal CLA-rich diet can differentially influence body weight increment, and CSD propagation (long-term effect) in the progeny, and the lactation is the most critical period for such diet actions. Expand
Ketogenic Diet Based on Extra Virgin Coconut Oil Has No Effects in Young Wistar Rats With Pilocarpine-Induced Epilepsy.
TLDR
The data suggest no effects of KD, with or without VCO, in rats with pilocarpine-induced epilepsy. Expand
Medium chain triglyceride diet reduces anxiety-like behaviors and enhances social competitiveness in rats
TLDR
The findings strongly suggest the effectiveness of MCT diet to exert anxiolytic effects in the brain, and point to the mPFC as a brain region in which MCT supplementation improves transport and control of energy substrates. Expand
Efeito de dieta cetogênica à base de óleo de coco sobre as crises convulsivas de ratos portadores de epilepsia induzida por pilocarpina
TLDR
A possible protective effect of ketogenic diet based on extra virgin coconut oil on seizures is suggested, coupled with studies attesting to confidence and tolerance of the coconut oil, particularly in ketogenic ratios, indicating a potential benefit of this oil for control the seizures, especially for individuals with medically refractory epilepsy. Expand
Efficacy and safety of exogenous ketone bodies for preventive treatment of migraine: A study protocol for a single-centred, randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind crossover trial
TLDR
If proven effective and safe, βHB might not only offer a new prophylactic treatment option for migraine patients, but might additionally pave the way for clinical trials assessing its use in related diseases. Expand

Plasma phospholipid fatty acids are influenced by a ketogenic diet enriched with n-3 fatty acids in children with epilepsy
TLDR
The possibility of composing the ketogenic diet in such a way that the FA profile is kept within a normal range is demonstrated, which may reduce cardiovascular risks. Expand
Treatment of cardiomyopathy and rhabdomyolysis in long-chain fat oxidation disorders using an anaplerotic odd-chain triglyceride.
TLDR
This treatment led rapidly to clinical improvement that included the permanent disappearance of chronic cardiomyopathy, rhabdomyolysis, and muscle weakness in three patients with very-long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency and opens new avenues for the management of patients with mitochondrial fat oxidation disorders. Expand
Calorie restriction of a high-carbohydrate diet elevates the threshold of PTZ-induced seizures to values equal to those seen with a ketogenic diet
TLDR
Seizure threshold and ketonemia were elevated in both experimental diets in approximate proportion to the degree of calorie restriction, and Animals fed the most severely restricted high-carbohydrate diet (50%) had seizure thresholds equal to those fed the ketogenic diet but had significantly lowerKetonemia. Expand
The MCT Ketogenic Diet: Effects on Animal Seizure Models
TLDR
It appears that clinical levels of ketones may be present in the bloodstream without suppressing seizures, and the tests involving maximal seizures actually showed proconvulsant effects. Expand
Despite transient ketosis, the classic high-fat ketogenic diet induces marked changes in fatty acid metabolism in rats.
TLDR
In the absence of sustained ketosis, changes in fatty acid metabolism resulting in an increase in brain polyunsaturates, particularly docosahexaenoic acid may, nevertheless, contribute to the seizure protection by the ketogenic diet. Expand
Seizure resistance is dependent upon age and calorie restriction in rats fed a ketogenic diet
TLDR
Results presented here demonstrate that the ketogenic diet produces the highest levels of ketonemia and seizure threshold in young animals and suggest that age and caloric restriction are important considerations for implementing theketogenic diet. Expand
Clinical efficacy of the ketogenic diet
TLDR
The ketogenic diet is an effective alternative therapy used to control intractable seizures, with 40-50% of those starting the diet having a >50% reduction in seizures after 12 months, and about 50% of children will continue on the diet for at least a year. Expand
The ketogenic diet influences the levels of excitatory and inhibitory amino acids in the CSF in children with refractory epilepsy
TLDR
The results indicate that the KD significantly alters the levels of several CSF amino acids that may be involved in its mechanism of action and the increase in GABA is of particular interest. Expand
Electrophysiological Observations in Hippocampal Slices from Rats Treated with the Ketogenic Diet
TLDR
In rats made chronically epileptic by administration of KA, KD treatment was associated with fewer spontaneous seizures and reduced CA1 excitability in vitro, suggesting that at least part of the KD mechanism of action may involve long-term changes in network excitability. Expand
Medium-chain triglycerides.
TLDR
Under certain in vitro conditions, M CTs exert proinflammatory effects, but in vivo MCTs may reduce intestinal injury and protect from hepatotoxicity, and MCFAs may reduce fasting lipid levels more than oils rich in mono- or polyunsaturated fatty acids. Expand
