Maturation of black spruce somatic embryos in sealed and vented microenvironments was investigated. The sealed microenvironment induced a larger number of well-formed mature embryos and less precocious germination than the vented microenvironment. Maturation rate of somatic embryos was not changed either by injection of ethylene into the culture vessel or by its removal by potassium permanganate traps.
