The first embryonic lower mouse molar was used as a model system to investigate the effects of two retinoids, retinoic acid (RA) and a synthetic analogue, Ch55, on morphogenesis and cytodifferentiations in vitro. Exogenous retinoids were indispensable for morphogenesis of bud, cap and bell-stage molars in serum-free, chemically-defined, culture media.
