This research explored the balance benefits to untrained older adults of participating in community-based resistance and flexibility programs. In a blinded randomized crossover trial, 32 older adults (M = 66.9 yr) participated in a resistance-exercise program and a flexibility-exercise program for 16 weeks each. Sway velocity and mediolateral sway range were recorded. Timed up-and-go, 10 times sit-to-stand, and step test were also assessed, and lower limb strength was measured. Significant…

TLDR
A simple long-term physical activity training program increases strength in both sexes, improves flexibility in women, and improves balance in older adults, indicating the importance of beginning early in old age and maintaining long‐term training.
Effects of Resistance Exercise Using Thera-band on Balance of Elderly Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial
TLDR
The findings of this study indicate that resistance exercise using the Thera-band is possible to improve the static and dynamic balance of elderly adults.
Pilates versus resistance training on trunk strength and balance adaptations in older women: a randomized controlled trial
TLDR
The Pilates training program was more effective for improving isometric hip and trunk extension strength, while the Muscular training program generated greater benefits on trunk and hip isokinetic strength.
The dose-response relationship of balance training in physically active older adults.
TLDR
The results demonstrate a dose-response relationship indicating that those who are already physically active can improve balance performance with the addition of balance-specific training.
Dynamic Balance of Older Adults
This study examined the effects of six weeks of strength training, balance training, and a combination of both on dynamic balance in older adults. Fifty-one seniors (17 males and 34 females) between
The effects of six weeks of balance and strength training on measures of dynamic balance of older adults.
TLDR
Results suggest six weeks of exercise training, regardless of type, was not sufficient to elicit significant changes in dynamic balance in the present sample of older adults.
Effects of a power training program in the functional capacity, on body balance and lower limb muscle strength of elderly with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
TLDR
The power training program was able to promote improvements in some functional parameters as on the body balance and functional capacity and muscle strength of the elderly with T2DM.
Effects of strength and flexibility training on functional performance of healthy older people.
TLDR
Six weeks of stretching or resistive training can improve the functional status of older people and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) decreased after six weeks in the RSG and 12 weeks inThe SG, Nevertheless, DBP decreased with the combination of resistive exercise and stretching.

The effect of strength and endurance training on gait, balance, fall risk, and health services use in community-living older adults.
TLDR
In community-living adults with mainly mild impairments in gait, balance, and physical health status, short-term exercise may not have a restorative effect on these impairments and exercise may have beneficial effects on fall rates and health care use in some subgroups of older adults.
Efficacy of Progressive Resistance Training on Balance Performance in Older Adults
TLDR
The limited evidence presented in currently published data has not consistently shown that the use of PRT in isolation improves balance in older adults, and further research should explore optimal resistance training regimens that focus on the muscles most pertinent to balance control.
Sit-to-Stand Performance of Older Adults following Strength Training
TLDR
Older adults completing an 8-week resistance-training program exploited their improved strength, forming a distinctive movement pattern emphasizing stability followed by a brisk rise, representing meaningfully improved function in an important daily living activity.
Tai Chi and fall reductions in older adults: a randomized controlled trial.
TLDR
A three-times-per-week, 6-month Tai Chi program is effective in decreasing the number of falls, the risk for falling, and the fear of falling, and it improves functional balance and physical performance in physically inactive persons aged 70 years or older.
Effects of a physical activity program on postural stability in older people
TLDR
The individualized physical activity program improved the postural stability of older people when the standing position was challenged, however, the lack of significant results for the hard floor condition suggests that three months is not sufficient to improve static balance.
Systematic review of progressive resistance strength training in older adults.
TLDR
PRT results in improvements to muscle strength and some aspects of functional limitation, such as gait speed, in older adults, however, based on current data, the effect of PRT on physical disability remains unclear.

TLDR
A preplanned meta-analysis of the seven Frailty and Injuries: Cooperative Studies of Intervention Techniques (FICSIT) trials that assessed intervention efficacy in reducing falls and frailty in elderly patients found treatments including exercise for elderly adults reduce the risk of falls.

TLDR
Foot and ankle characteristics, particularly ankle flexibility, plantar tactile sensation, and strength of toe plantarflexor muscles, are significant independent predictors of balance and functional ability in older people.
A prospective study of postural balance and risk of falling in an ambulatory and independent elderly population.
TLDR
Lateral spontaneous-sway amplitude was found to be the single best predictor of future falling risk, particularly for the large group of falls that were precipitated by a biomechanical perturbation.
