OBJECTIVE To study diaphragmatic strength and endurance after a prolonged period of mechanical ventilation. DESIGN Prospective animal study. SETTING Animal research laboratory. SUBJECTS Seven uninjured adult baboons (Papio cynocephalus) were anesthetized with ketamine, sedated, paralyzed, and mechanically ventilated.
