The aim of this study was to understand the effects of projective bone area (BA) size of the spine on bone density and the diagnosis of osteoporosis. Measurements of BA, bone mineral content (BMC), areal bone density (aBMD) and volumetric bone density (vBMD) at the posteroanterior (PA) lumbar spine (vertebrae L2-L4) followed by a paired PA/lateral spine (L2-L4) were made using a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) fan-beam bone densitometer (Hologic QDR 4500A) in 1436 healthy pre-menopausal…
Relationship of body surface area with bone density and its risk of osteoporosis at various skeletal regions in women of mainland China
TLDR
The relationship between BS and BMD exceeds that between BMD and height or weight in women in mainland China and is shown to be the most important variable that affected the PA spine, hip and forearm BMDs.

TLDR
WB-LS analysis may provide data for the indirect estimation of spinal BMD, and produced the best sensitivity-to-specificity ratio in the diagnosis of lumbar spine osteoporosis and low bone mass.
Are adult patients with Laron syndrome osteopenic? A comparison between dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and volumetric bone densities.
TLDR
DEXA does not seem to be a reliable measure of osteoporosis in patients with LS, as areal BMD was significantly lower in the LS and osteopenic subjects compared with controls and BMAD was low.
The genetic, environmental and phenotypic correlations of bone phenotypes at the spine and hip in Chinese
TLDR
It is suggested that bone size may be used as another surrogate phenotype independently of BMD for eventual elucidation of the pathogenesis of osteoporosis because of the limited correlations between BMD and bone size.
Comparison of spine and femur reference data in native Chinese women from different regions of China
TLDR
It is concluded that, in high density population areas, sBMD reference curves showed no significant geographic differences in women from various regions, as well as at the posteroanterior lumbar spine, femoral neck, trochanter and Ward's triangle.
Association of microstructural and mechanical properties of cancellous bone and their fracture risk assessment tool scores.
TLDR
The study suggests that the probabilities of major osteoporotic and hip fracture using FRAX is associated with bone mass but not with micro bone quality.
Genetic and Environmental Correlations Between Bone Mineral Density and Bone Size in Caucasians
TLDR
It may be important to choose both BMD and BS, especially at the hip, as surrogate phenotypes for osteoporosis genetic studies in Caucasians, according to the results of a bivariate variance decomposition analysis.
Prevalence and Analysis of Risk Factors of Osteoporosis in Persons of Above 40 Years Age Group in Amritsar - A Study of 500 Cases
TLDR
Osteoporosis is a silent killer and prevention requires simple steps such as good dietary habits, active life style, good control of systemic disorders, and reduced intake of coffee, tobacco and alcohol.

Age-Related Bone Mineral Density, Accumulated Bone Loss Rate and Prevalence of Osteoporosis at Multiple Skeletal Sites in Chinese Women
TLDR
The data suggest that the supine lateral spine is the most sensitive site for the diagnosis of osteoporosis, especially in the early menopausal period, although the prevalence of osteiporosis varied with age and with different sites measured.
Effects of Body Size and Skeletal Site on the Estimated Prevalence of Osteoporosis in Women and Men
TLDR
The various adjustments for bone size and the different patterns of age-related change in bone density had profound effects on the estimated prevalence of osteoporosis by World Health Organization criteria, which ranged from 2% to 45% among postmenopausal women and from 0 to 36% among men 50 years of age and older depending upon the skeletal parameter that was assessed.
Comparison of areal and estimated volumetric bone mineral density values between older men and women
TLDR
Results demonstrate how measures from areal BMD measures can be misleading when comparing groups of different size and in older men and women planar measures may overestimate gender differences in BMD.
Estimates of volumetric bone density from projectional measurements improve the discriminatory capability of dual X‐ray absorptiometry
TLDR
It is concluded that, like QCT, estimates of volumetric bone density from paired PA and lateral scans are unaffected by height and weight and are more strongly associated with vertebral fracture than standard PA BMD or BMC, or estimates ofvolumetric density that are solely based on PA DXA scans.
Diagnosis of osteoporosis by planar bone densitometry: can body size be disregarded?
TLDR
It is suggested that BMC and BMD of the lumbar spine and the femoral neck should be normalized as described to avoid overdiagnosis of osteoporosis in persons of petite body stature and underdiagnosis in tall ones.

TLDR
There is a greater decrease in volumetric and lateral BMD of vertebra L3 than the AP measurements, both with age and in postmenopausal osteoporosis compared to age‐matched controls, and the diagnostic accuracy was not improved by correcting BMC for vertebral volume.
Bone Mineral Density and Bone Size in Men With Primary Osteoporosis and Vertebral Fractures
TLDR
It is concluded that men with vertebral osteoporotic fractures have reduced vertebral BMD and vertebral dimensions compared with age-matched controls, indicating that the achievement of a reduced bone size at the end of the growth period or a failure of periosteal increase during adult life is likely to contribute to the pathogenesis of the vertebral fractures observed in older men.
Volumetric bone mineral density in normal subjects, aged 5-27 years.
TLDR
The vBMD of the femoral neck and shaft is independent of age and is less dependent on growth variables in children and young adults than is aBMD.
Apparent Pre‐ and Postmenopausal Bone Loss Evaluated by DXA at Different Skeletal Sites in Women: The OFELY Cohort
TLDR
There is a moderate apparent premenopausal bone loss that occurs only at cancellous bone sites and that apparent bone loss is accelerated at most skeletal sites after the age of 75 years, suggests this cross‐sectional but large study.
Normal data for lumbar spine bone mineral content in healthy elderly Chinese: influences of sex, age, obesity and ethnicity
TLDR
The findings indicate that the influence of sex, age, obesity and ethnicity exist in the BMD values of elderly healthy Chinese.
