The effects of lactational status and reproductive status on patterns of follicle growth and regression were studied in 41 llamas. Animals were examined daily by transrectal ultrasonography for at least 30 days. The presence or absence of a corpus luteum and the diameter of the largest and second largest follicle in each ovary were recorded. Llamas were categorized as lactating (N = 16) or non-lactating (N = 25) and randomly allotted to the following groups (reproductive status): (1) unmated…

Figures and Tables from this paper

Ovarian follicular wave synchronization and pregnancy rate after fixed-time natural mating in llamas.
Ovarian follicular synchronization, ovulation and oocyte development in llamas and alpacas
TLDR
The purpose of the studies reported in this thesis was to increase the understanding of the reproductive physiology of South American camelids and to document the existence of an ovulation-inducing factor (OIF) in the seminal plasma of alpacas and llamas.
Ovarian structures during the estrous cycle and early pregnancy in ewes.
TLDR
Number of newly detected follicles each day and difference in mean diameter between the largest two follicles and all other follicles were similar between PREG and CYC ewes until luteal regression, at which time, difference in diameter increased in CYC iwes in parallel with estradiol-17 beta in serum.
Control of ovarian activity in Llamas (Lama glama) with medroxyprogesterone acetate.
TLDR
The protocol evaluated in this study was shown to be useful for the synchronization of ovarian activity and for predicting the time when an ovulatory follicle will be present in llamas.

In situ morphologic dynamics of ovaries, uterus, and cervix in llamas.
TLDR
The morphologic appearance of the ovaries, uterus, and cervix of nonpregnant and pregnant llamas and all (7/7) singleton embryonic vesicles were detected in the left uterine horn and the cervical folds became echogenic and prominent during luteal dominance.
Pattern of growth of dominant follicles during the oestrous cycle of heifers.
TLDR
The analysis of the rates of growth and atresia suggest that the rate of growth is slowest during mid-cycle, and the number of dominant follicles that developed in the ovary ipsilateral to the corpus luteum was greater than in the contralateral ovary.
Ovarian follicular dynamics during the estrous cycle in heifers monitored by real-time ultrasonography.
TLDR
It is shown that the development of ovarian follicles greater than or equal to 5 mm in heifers occurs in waves and that the most common pattern is three waves per estrous cycle.
Ovarian follicular dynamics in heifers during early pregnancy.
TLDR
Daily ultrasonic monitoring of individual follicles was used to compare follicular wave characteristics of nonbred and pregnant heifers and found the dominant follicle was similar in diameter for the two groups but maintained or increased in diameter in the nonbred heifer so that a greater maximum diameter was attained.
Relationships between endogenous gonadotropin-releasing hormone, gonadotropins, and follicular development after weaning in sows.
TLDR
It is proposed that initiation of estrus and ovulation after weaning may be associated with changes in production of GnRH, concurrently with postweaning increases in serum FSH, serum and pituitary LH and follicular development.
Temporal associations among ovarian events in cattle during oestrous cycles with two and three follicular waves.
TLDR
The emergence of a 3rd wave was associated with a longer luteal phase, and the viable dominant follicle present at the time of luteolysis became the ovulatory follicle.
Effect of different mating stimuli on induction of ovulation in the alpaca.
TLDR
Results indicate that mounting accompanied by penile intromission is necessary to provide an adequate stimulus for lh release and subsequent ovulation in the alpaca.
