Two mutants of Escherichia coli strictly deficient in uridine-diphosphoglucose pyrophosphorylase activity (galU) were found to have very small numbers of flagellar filaments and hooks. In these mutants, both the rate of flagellin (flagellar protein) synthesis and the amount of messenger ribonucleic acid specific for flagellin were considerably lower than in the parental strains.
