Bovine serum albumin (BSA) and fetal calf serum (FCS) were evaluated as protein supplements for in vitro maturation and fertilization of oocytes from cows and hamsters. BSA and low doses of FCS (0.1 or 1.0%) did not support viability or maturation of the cumulus-oocyte complex as well as higher doses of FCS (5, 10, or 20%) for either species.
