Eighty New Zealand rabbits in eight groups (10 each) were fed a 0.5% cholesterol diet for 12 weeks. One group served as a control and was sacrificed at the end of 12 weeks. Seven other groups were shifted to a normal diet and received a drug(s) or placebo for the second 12 weeks. The high dose of etidronate (3 mg/kg/day) with lovastatin (6 mg/kg/day) significantly reduced the percent of aortic atherosclerotic lesions [56 +/- 21 vs. 77 +/- 17% (mean +/- SD), p < 0.05] in the regression study…

Effect of Lovastatin on Plaque Formation and Ldl Oxidation in Cholesterol-Fed Rabbits
- Biology, Medicine

It is suggested that lovastatin can slow the progression of atherosclerotic plaque formation in rabbits induced by cholesterol-feeding without decreasing the oxidative susceptibility of LDL.

It is concluded that the male Golden Syrian hamster represents a useful model of dietary induced regression as well as progression of atherosclerosis.
Effects of bisphosphonates on lipid metabolism.
- MedicineNeuro endocrinology letters

Data from this study suggest that alendronate therapy may have beneficial effects on lipid metabolism, and when hyperlipidemia is detected in patients receiving bisphosphonates, it is considered reasonable to follow the patient for a while before initiating antihyperlipidemic agent to prevent unnecessary use of drugs.

Bisphosphonates seem to have an inhibitory effect on the atherosclerotic process; however, larger placebo-controlled studies are needed to better clarify this issue.
