In this paper, we address the problem of rotation invariance in edge detection . The sensitivity of first-order edge detectors to edge orientation is examined . It is shown that the rotation invariance property of an edge detector has no precise consequences on its performance . There are rotationally symmetric (rcsp . rotationally dependent) detectors the performance of which is edge orientation sensitive (resp. orientation independent) and vice-versa .
