BACKGROUND/AIM The aim of the present study was to examine the anticancer effects of combination treatment with artemisinin and iron on the human gastric cancer cell line. MATERIALS AND METHODS The AGS cell line was cultivated separately as a monolayer in culture flasks and different doses of 99% pure artemisinin with invariable doses of iron sulfate were added to the culture media and adhesive cells on the flask's bottom were stained with hematoxylin-eosin for a pathological assay. A survey on anticancer effects of artemisinin, iron, miconazole, and butyric acid on 5637 (bladder cancer) and 4T1 (Breast cancer) cell lines.
TLDR
A combination therapy with artemisinin can be more effective against cancer cells than monotherapy with that and miconazole deviated the nature of cell death from apoptosis to necrosis and it must be used under caution. Expand

TLDR
Artemisinin-transferrin conjugate could be developed into a potent therapeutic agent for cancer in humans after being tested in a rat breast cancer model. Expand
Effects of different concentrations of artemisinin and artemisinin-iron combination treatment on Madin Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cells
TLDR
Biochemical parameters showed cellular reaction and injury was more severe in the iron-added groups, and on using the drug for leishmaniasis treatment in the dog, it should be done with caution and supervision. Expand
Development of artemisinin compounds for cancer treatment
TLDR
Simple artemisinin analogs are less potent than traditional cancer chemotherapeutic agents and have short plasma half-lives, and would require high dosage and frequent administration to be effective for cancer treatment. Expand
Enhancement of cytotoxicity of artemisinins toward cancer cells by ferrous iron.
TLDR
Treatment of p53 wild-type TK6 and p53 mutated WTK1 lymphoblastic cells showed that mutational status of the tumor suppressor p53 did not influence sensitivity to artesunate, indicating that artemisinins plus ferrous iron may affect tumor cells more than normal cells. Expand
[A new artemisinin derivative SM1044 induces apoptosis of Kasumi-1 cells and its mechanism].
TLDR
It is concluded that SM1044 can inhibit the proliferation of Kasumi-1 cells, induce cell apoptosis which may be related to the increased level of cleaved PARP and cleaved caspase 3 and induce cell arrest in G(0)/G(1) phase. Expand
