BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Cytidine-5'-diphosphocholine (citicoline or CDP-choline) is an essential intermediate in the biosynthesis of phosphatidylcholine, an important component of the neural cell membrane. Citicoline provided significant neuroprotection after transient forebrain ischemia in gerbils.
