Analogs of ceramide which inhibit galactocerebrosidase also demyelinate or inhibit myelination in organ cultures of rat cerebellum. The potency of the analogs in culture correlated with their effectiveness as inhibitors of cerebrosidase, but not with their effectiveness as inhibitors of galactosyl transferase.
