We have previously shown that central administration of beta-endorphin results in a reduction of ornithine decarboxylase activity. Ornithine decarboxylase catalyses the rate-limiting step in the biosynthesis of the polyamines putrescine, spermidine and spermine, thought to modulate nucleic acid synthesis.
