Nasal blockage is a common complaint in Family Practice. Decongestive nosedrops are frequently employed therapeutic measures. Due to a considerable risk of abuse and side effects, alternatives are wanted. The purpose of this study was to elucidate to what extent ENDS might represent an alternative to decongestive nose sprays (DNS). The effects of DNS (xylometazolin) and ENDS (BreatheRight®) on subjective and objective nasal blockage were compared in 89 patients. Main outcome measures were…

In conclusion, ENDs seem useful, so further studies involving potential effects on the performance of physical tests and improvements in sleep quality are necessary, especially in children and teenagers.
Randomized Trials of Nasal Patency and Dermal Tolerability With External Nasal Dilators in Healthy Volunteers

Both the BRNS and butterfly strip were generally well tolerated, with no evidence of dermal response over 7 consecutive nights of use, and between-strip differences were confined to nasal dimensions.

It is demonstrated that use of an ENDS beneath an N95 respirator may not significantly increase exercise tolerance, and a sizable proportion of ED personnel may fail N95 fit testing while wearing anENDS beneath the N95 mask for which they had been previously fitted.

It is demonstrated that Qiar ® is effective in reducing nasal obstruction, snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, improves breathing during exercise, reduces nasal congestion, eases breathing through the nose and improves the architecture and quality of sleep.

Rinomanometry with topical decongestion has a high predictive value for the objective outcome of diode laser-assisted turbinoplasty and can help to estimate the patients' benefit from diode Laser-assisted Turbinoplasty.
Effects of nasal dilator strips on subjective measures of sleep in subjects with chronic nocturnal nasal congestion: a randomized, placebo-controlled trial

The asymmetric butterfly prototype and BRNS clear strip significantly improved some subjective measures of nasal congestion and sleep compared with placebo in subjects with chronic nasal congestion and sleep difficulties.
Objective and Subjective Effects of a Prototype Nasal Dilator Strip on Sleep in Subjects with Chronic Nocturnal Nasal Congestion
- MedicineAdvances in Therapy

A role for the improved spring force nasal dilator strip in alleviating sleep-related symptoms in subjects with chronic nasal congestion, potentially via lowering nasal resistance and reducing nocturnal awakenings is supported.

The results showed that Peak Nasal Inspiratory Flow seems to be an useful instrument to be used in nasal patency evaluation, despite some limitations, providing complementary data to orofacial myofunctional diagnosis.

This review is an update of the availability of external evidence for the treatment of nasal obstruction and rhinosinusitis and it becomes obvious that surgical treatment options are normally based on evidence of significantly lower quality than medical treatment options.

It is concluded that the external nasal dilator strip influences nasal airflow dynamics by both dilation of the nasal valve and stabilization of the lateral nasal vestibule walls and may be more effective in subjects with a high resting nasal airflow resistance.

It is concluded that the nasal dilatator causes no appreciable improvement of nasal patency during normal breathing and in view of the fact that FIV 1 values increased significantly, it is believed that the Nasal Dilatator prevents collapse of the external nares during forced inspiration.

The results of this study suggest that there is an internal valve at the nasal isthmus where the principal alterations in airway patency follow changes in mucosal congestion, and a mobile external valve where airflow is limited by the tendency of the alar cartilages to collapse.
