The non-protein amino acid -aminobutyric acid (BABA) protects numerous plants against various pathogens. Protection of plants against pathogens involves the potentiation of pathogen-specific defense responses. Penicillium italicum Wehme is one of the most important postharvest pathogens of citrus fruit. During the infection of citrus fruit by Penicillium spp. there is little evidence of a host defense response. This suggests that Penicillium spp. has the ability to suppress host defenses.
