Effects of ambient gases on ion emission stability of Au–Si–Be and Pd–Ni–Si–Be–B liquid‐metal (LM) ion sources have been studied. Water vapor and oxygen gas have significant effects on ion emission stability. These effects are thought to be due to oxidation of the liquid‐metal surface, especially the Be atoms. A higher operating temperature enhances these effects, while it reduces the effects for Ga‐ion sources. Vapor pressures of resultant oxides are discussed to explain these results.
