Abstract A high-purity cerium specimen (99·53 a/o pure) was examined by dilatometric means in the temperature range 20°–475°K and under pressures of 0–10,000 atm, and by X-ray techniques at room temperature following a variety of heat treatments. In these studies, the lattice constants of α-Ce (f.c.c. a = 5·1601 A ), β-Ce (hex., a = 3·673 A , c = 11·802 A ) and a new phase designated as “α-γ intermediate”-Ce (also f.c.c., a = 5·1233 A ) were determined.
