BACKGROUND Falls during walking are often triggered when a foot contacts an obstacle in its path. Yet little is known about the ability of individuals of any age to successfully negotiate obstacles, especially under time-critical conditions. METHODS The gait of 24 young and 24 old healthy adults (mean ages 23 and 73 years) was studied as they approached and tried to avoid stepping on a band of light, not knowing when or where it might appear on an 8 m-long walkway.
