OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect of a probiotic product in acute self-limiting gastroenteritis in dogs. METHODS Thirty-six dogs suffering from acute diarrhoea or acute diarrhoea and vomiting were included in the study. The trial was performed as a randomised, double blind and single centre study with stratified parallel group design. The animals were allocated to equal looking probiotic or placebo treatment by block randomisation with a fixed block size of six. The probiotic cocktail…
Effect of probiotic formulation containing Bacillus spp. on diarrhoea in dogs
TLDR
The study demonstrates the efficacy of B. coagulans and B. subtilis in the treatment of diarrhoea in dogs and shows significant improvement in stool consistency in the probiotic treated group as compared to placebo.
Therapeutic Effect of Lactobacillus-based Probiotic on Canine Acute Diarrhea
TLDR
An efficient treatment with lactobacillus-based probiotic as solo therapeutic agent against canine acute diarrhea, not only reduce the recovery time, but also, enhance liver functions and improve the fecal consistency is indicated.
Effect of probiotic treatment on the clinical course, intestinal microbiome, and toxigenic Clostridium perfringens in dogs with acute hemorrhagic diarrhea
TLDR
The probiotic treatment was associated with an accelerated normalization of the intestinal microbiome and dogs with aseptic AHDS showed a rapid decrease of netF toxin genes and fast clinical recovery in both groups under symptomatic treatment without antibiotics.
A Randomized Double Blinded Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial of a Probiotic or Metronidazole for Acute Canine Diarrhea
TLDR
These findings failed to provide evidence for the common use of metronidazole in this cohort of dogs with acute canine diarrhea, and a larger study population would be required to identify a statistically significant effect of probiotics.
Clinical effect of probiotics in prevention or treatment of gastrointestinal disease in dogs: A systematic review
TLDR
The current data point toward a very limited and possibly clinically unimportant effect for prevention or treatment of acute gastrointestinal disease, whereas probiotic supplement seems not to add significant improvement for chronic gastrointestinal disease.
Efficacy of an orally administered anti‐diarrheal probiotic paste (Pro‐Kolin Advanced) in dogs with acute diarrhea: A randomized, placebo‐controlled, double‐blinded clinical study
TLDR
The ADPP was associated with better clinical outcome compared to placebo in dogs with acute, uncomplicated diarrhea and the requirement for AMI and may accelerate resolution of acute diarrhea in dogs.
Clinical benefits of probiotic canine-derived Bifidobacterium animalis strain AHC7 in dogs with acute idiopathic diarrhea.
TLDR
Proper nutritional management with the probiotic fed at 2 x 10 CFU/day significantly reduced the time to resolution and reduced the percentage of dogs that were administered metronidazole compared with placebo.
Metagenomic analysis revealed beneficial effects of probiotics in improving the composition and function of the gut microbiota in dogs with diarrhoea.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of probiotics on the composition and function of the gut microbiota in dogs with diarrhoea. Forty dogs with diarrhoea were randomly allocated
Metronidazole treatment of acute diarrhea in dogs: A randomized double blinded placebo‐controlled clinical trial
TLDR
It is suggested that metronidazole treatment can shorten duration of diarrhea and decrease fecal culture detection of C. perfringens in some dogs with acute nonspecific diarrhea.

In vitro adhesion of lactic acid bacteria to canine small intestinal mucus
TLDR
It is shown that probiotic strains from human origin and intended for human use also adhere to canine intestinal mucus, and warrants further investigation of these strains for use in dogs.
