Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is the inhibitory component of the troponin complex, and its interaction with cardiac troponin C (cTnC) plays a critical role in transmitting the Ca(2+) signal to the other myofilament proteins in heart muscle contraction. The switch between contraction and relaxation involves a movement of the inhibitory region of cTnI (cIp) from cTnC to actin-tropomyosin.
