Several forms of loblolly pine were compared as starting materials for oxygen pulping under oxygen-rich conditions. These included fiberized with sodium hydroxide, fiberized with sodium carbonate/bicarbonate, conventional chips, rolled chips, and thin flakes. The mechanical damage due to fiberization was characterized microscopically and found to be compressive.
