Escherichia coli strains carrying the Bacillus subtilis acetolactate synthase (ALS) gene were previously shown to produce less acetate with higher ATP yields. Metabolic flux analysis was used to show that excess pyruvate was channeled into the less inhibitory product, acetoin.
