Autoimmune thyroiditis with hypothyroidism is frequently accompanied by symptoms of psychiatric disorders and atherogenic changes in lipid metabolism. Recent studies suggest that some neuroactive steroids and homocysteine are involved in the pathophysiology of both disorders. Homocysteine metabolism may be affected by some steroids.
