The interaction of amphotericin B and some of its semisynthetic derivatives with cholesterol and ergosterol has been tested in 1:4 (v/v) ethanol/water mixture by circular dichroism and absorption spectroscopy. The effect of the chemical modification of the 'ionizable head' of the antibiotic, the pH of the medium, and the sterol/antibiotic ratio has been studied.
