The effects of recombinant interferons (rIFNs) on colony formation by progenitor cells from the peripheral blood of patients with hairy cell leukemia (HCL) were examined. Results showed that both rIFN-alpha and -beta inhibited HCL colony formation in a dose-dependent manner, with the inhibitory effect of rIFN-alpha being similar in degree with that of rIFN-beta. The inhibitory effect of rIFN-gamma, however, was not uniform; of four patients, inhibition was observed in cells from two patients…

Interferon-? Stimulates the Survival and Influences the Development of Bipotential Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony-Forming Cells By 0
TLDR
The effects of interferon-y (IFN-y) on a highly enriched population of granulocyte-macrophage colony-forming cells (GM-CFC) were assessed and IFNy stimulated an increase in the number of macrophages present in colonies formed in the presence of IL-3.

TLDR
In vitro studies indicate that these rIFNs may be efficacious in the treatment of AML, though development of granulocytopenia may be observed as a complication of IFN therapy.
Recombinant alpha-2-interferon for hairy cell leukemia.
TLDR
Recombinant alpha-2-interferon is highly effective therapy for hairy cell leukemia and bone marrow biopsies showed a greater than 50% decrease in the infiltration of leukemia cells.

Treatment of hairy cell leukemia with recombinant alpha 2 interferon
TLDR
Recombinant alpha 2 interferon is effective in the treatment of hairy cell leukemia, with acceptable toxicity, and bone marrow biopsies demonstrated improvement in all eight patients.
Alpha interferon for induction of remission in hairy-cell leukemia.
TLDR
Alpha interferon appears to be highly effective in patients with hairy-cell leukemia with daily doses of 3 million units of partially pure alpha (leukocyte)interferon by the intramuscular route.
B cell growth factor-induced proliferation of hairy cell lymphocytes and inhibition by type I interferon in vitro.
TLDR
The data demonstrate that malignant HCL lymphoblasts express specific type I IFN receptors and that type I, but not type II IFN, can inhibit growth factor-induced DNA synthesis by hairy cells in vitro, and suggest a direct antiproliferative mechanism of action for IFN in HCL.
Effects of recombinant human interferon gamma on hematopoietic progenitor cell growth.
TLDR
A suppressive effect of rHuIFN-gamma is demonstrated on human erythroid and myeloid progenitor cell growth, which appears to be most pronounced on the more primitive stages of committed progenitors cell development.

TLDR
The cellular relationships of hairy cells in colonies grown in this system closely mimic those of their in vivo counterparts in the spleen and bone marrow.
In vitro culture of spleen hairy cells.
TLDR
In vitro culture of hairy cells were successful in 5 patients with hairy cell leukemia: splenic cells were cultured in methyl cellulose plus PHA-leucocyte conditioned stimulation medium for 7 days and a linear correlation between the number of cells plated and thenumber of colonies produced was found.
