}The effect of muscle length on neural drive (here termed "neural activation") was investigated from electromyographic activities and activation levels (twitch interpolation). The neural activation was measured in nine men during isometric and concentric (30 and 120 degrees /s) knee extensions for three muscle lengths (35, 55, and 75 degrees knee flexion, i.e., shortened, intermediate, and lengthened muscles, respectively). Long (76 degrees ), medium (56 degrees ), and short (36 degrees ) ranges…

Neural activation after maximal isometric contractions at different muscle lengths.

Results clearly demonstrate that the neural activation dependence on quadriceps muscle length is maintained with fatigue, and neuromuscular fatigue after maximal isometric contractions is dependent on the muscle length at which the exercise is performed: short length preferentially induces neural activation impairment, whereas long length leads to higher contractile failure.
Vastus lateralis surface and single motor unit EMG during shortening, lengthening and isometric contractions corrected for mode dependent strength differences
- Biology
- 2011
During dynamic contractions additional factors such as shortening induced force losses and lengthening induced force gains may affect muscle strength and thereby neuromuscular activity, and even after correction for force-velocity related differences in muscle strength was taken into account, neuromUScular activity was not lower during lengthening but was still higher during shortening compared to isometric contractions.

It is concluded that NMES generate greater torque and current efficiency at 60° of knee flexion, compared to 20°, which may help exercise physiologist better understand the impact of hip and knee angles on designing more rational NMES stimulation strategies.
The influence of knee angle on human quadriceps femoris performance

Differences in endurance at different knee angles do not find their origin in differences in central activation and blood flow but may be a consequence of muscle length related differences in metabolic cost.

The lower ability of children to fully activate their motor units at long muscle length could account for their lower specific torque because no difference in theoretical specific torque was observed between groups at 90° and 100°.
Change in muscle fascicle length influences the recruitment and discharge rate of motor units during isometric contractions.
- BiologyJournal of neurophysiology

The data indicate that the central command is modulated by the afferent proprioceptive information during submaximal contractions performed at different muscle fascicle lengths, and increased rate coding was mainly present at low torque level.
Twitch potentiation is greater after a fatiguing submaximal isometric contraction performed at short vs. long quadriceps muscle length.
- Biology, MedicineJournal of applied physiology
- 2005
It is suggested that the greater endurance time of a sustained isometric contraction observed at 35 degrees is related to the occurrence of potentiation at this short length, because central fatigue is similar at task failure for both tasks.

Long muscle lengths require greater preceding activity to limit RTD than short muscle lengths, which indicates long muscle lengths may offer a "protective effect" for RTD against preceding activity.
Effect of prolonged vibration to synergistic and antagonistic muscles on the rectus femoris activation during multi-joint exercises
- Biology, MedicineEuropean Journal of Applied Physiology

The findings suggest that lower biarticular RF activation compared with the monoarticular vasti muscles during multi-joint exercises does not result from the modulation by peripheral inhibitory input from Ia afferents originating from synergist and/or antagonist muscles.

It is suggested that maximal voluntary activation of motoneurone pools is possible at short muscle lengths and that the central nervous system is able to maintain the discharge of mot oneurones close to ‘fusion’ frequency despite a decrease in the temporal characteristics of the isometric twitch.

It is indicated that muscle length does influence the discharge pattern of motor unit spike trains during isometric ramp contractions, and Spike trains with higher discharge rates at recruitment in shortened muscle may take advantage of the catch-like properties in muscle and be useful in taking up the slack in the passive elements of the muscle and tendon.
